Top Platinum ETFs: Ranked List of Platinum Funds
Platinum is approximately 30 times rarer than gold and ranks among the scarcest elements in Earth’s crust, with only a few hundred metric tonnes produced each year. Unlike gold, which serves primarily as an investment asset, platinum is both a precious metal and an industrial metal — used in catalytic converters, fuel cell technology, medical devices, glass manufacturing, and even cancer treatment compounds like cisplatin and carboplatin.
The most common platinum ETFs hold physical platinum bars in secure vaults, where each share represents direct ownership of the underlying metal. Other structures use futures contracts or invest in platinum mining companies.
- PPLT (abrdn Physical Platinum Shares ETF): A physically backed fund launched in 2010 by abrdn, holding allocated platinum bars with no futures or derivatives.
- SPPP (Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust): Stores metal at Royal Canadian Mint vaults, combining platinum and palladium exposure.
- Futures-based ETNs: Track platinum prices through derivative contracts rather than holding physical metal.
About 97% of global platinum comes from just five countries — South Africa, Russia, Zimbabwe, Canada, and the United States. South Africa alone produces more than twice as much as every other country combined, with its Merensky Reef containing roughly 75% of the world’s known platinum reserves. The automotive sector accounts for approximately 45% of global platinum usage, while hydrogen fuel cell vehicles use around 30 grams of platinum per vehicle.
