European Dividend Aristocrats: High-Yield Stocks from Europe

Unlike their American counterparts, which require 25 consecutive years of dividend increases, European dividend aristocrats qualify with just 10 years of uninterrupted growth. The S&P Europe 350 Dividend Aristocrats index, launched on May 2, 2005, and maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices, tracks roughly 40 companies from 17 European countries that meet this standard.

The index is a subset of the S&P Europe 350 and uses equal weighting — each constituent carries the same weight regardless of size, with quarterly rebalancing. Companies must also meet minimum liquidity and market capitalization thresholds. The list is reviewed annually: firms that stop raising dividends may be removed, and new qualifiers can be added.

The United Kingdom and Switzerland dominate the index. Industrials carry the largest sector weight, followed by strong representation in financials — names like Allianz, Munich Re, and Deutsche Börse. The broader list spans pharmaceuticals, consumer staples, luxury goods, food & beverage, and technology.

Some of the longest dividend growth streaks among European aristocrats include:

  • SAP — has increased its dividend every year since 1988
  • Nestlé — has paid dividends continuously since 1959, one of the oldest records on the continent
  • L’Oréal — has not cut its dividend in over 32 years and offers a 10% bonus dividend to long-term registered shareholders
  • CRH — has raised its dividend every year since 1989
  • RELX — has increased its dividend every year since 1997
  • Novartis — has raised dividends for 25+ consecutive years

A related index, the S&P Euro High Yield Dividend Aristocrats, narrows the focus to the 40 highest-yielding Eurozone stocks from the S&P Europe Broad Market Index with at least 10 years of stable or rising dividends. This index weights constituents by indicated dividend yield rather than equally. The SPDR S&P Euro Dividend Aristocrats UCITS ETF (ticker SPYW on Xetra, EUDV on the LSE), domiciled in Ireland and launched in February 2012, tracks this high-yield variant and pays dividends semi-annually.
