GRANOLAS Stocks List: Europe’s 11 Top Performers
Goldman Sachs coined the term GRANOLAS to describe 11 of Europe’s largest companies by market capitalisation. The acronym stands for GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, ASML, Nestlé, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, L’Oréal, LVMH, AstraZeneca, SAP, and Sanofi — a group spread across six countries: the UK, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, and Germany. Often described as Europe’s answer to the Magnificent Seven, the GRANOLAS are recognised for strong earnings growth, low volatility, and high profit margins.
Healthcare dominates the group, with six of the eleven members operating in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology:
- Healthcare: Novo Nordisk, Roche, AstraZeneca, Novartis, GSK, Sanofi
- Technology: ASML — the only company in the world producing extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines — and SAP, Europe’s enterprise software leader
- Consumer Staples: Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, and L’Oréal, the world’s largest cosmetics company
- Luxury Goods: LVMH, the largest listed company in France
Together, the GRANOLAS stocks account for roughly a quarter of the STOXX 600’s total market capitalisation — equivalent to the combined weight of entire sectors like energy, financials, and automobiles. Less than 20% of their revenue comes from Europe, making them a globally exposed group despite their European listings. All eleven pay dividends, and Roche has raised its annual dividend for more than 30 consecutive years.
