Largest Companies Listed on XETRA by Market Cap

Ninety percent of all share trading across German exchanges runs through XETRA, the electronic trading venue operated by Deutsche Börse AG from Frankfurt. Launched on 28 November 1997 as a replacement for the IBIS platform, XETRA connects over 200 trading participants from 16 European countries — plus Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates — to a single order book trading in euros.

The largest companies on XETRA are primarily members of the DAX 40 index, which has been calculated every second since 2006 and covers approximately 80% of total German listed market capitalization. Key sectors and names include:

  • Technology / Software: SAP SE — the largest company on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange
  • Industrials: Siemens AG, Airbus SE, Siemens Energy AG
  • Financials / Insurance: Allianz SE, Deutsche Börse
  • Automotive: BMW AG, Volkswagen AG, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche
  • Healthcare: Siemens Healthineers, Bayer, Fresenius
  • Materials / Chemicals: Linde plc, BASF

Beyond equities, XETRA also hosts ETFs, ETPs, bonds, warrants, and commodities across two market segments: the Regulated Market (Prime Standard and General Standard) and the Open Market. All trading takes place in EUR during CET sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The DAX is notably one of the few major country indices that factors in dividends in its most commonly quoted version, reflecting total return rather than price return alone.
