Largest American Tech Companies: Big Tech Stocks List
All seven members of the so-called Magnificent Seven — Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Tesla — trade on the NASDAQ, making it the single most important exchange for US Big Tech stocks. Together, these companies account for roughly one-third of the S&P 500’s total market capitalization and span three GICS sectors: Information Technology, Communication Services, and Consumer Discretionary.
The term “Big Tech” has evolved through a series of acronyms — FANG (coined by Jim Cramer in 2013), FAANG (expanded in 2017 to include Apple), MAMAA, and most recently the Magnificent Seven, a label introduced by Bank of America in 2023.
What each company does:
- Apple (AAPL): Founded in 1976, Apple builds consumer electronics — iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch — and runs a services platform that includes the App Store, iCloud, and Apple TV+.
- Microsoft (MSFT): Developer of desktop operating systems and productivity software, and the second-largest cloud provider through Microsoft Azure. Microsoft made a $13 billion investment in OpenAI.
- Nvidia (NVDA): Founded in 1993, Nvidia designs the GPUs favored for training large language models, placing it at the center of the artificial intelligence boom.
- Alphabet (GOOGL): The holding company formed through a 2015 restructuring of Google. Active in search, advertising, AI, quantum computing, and autonomous vehicles through subsidiary Waymo.
- Amazon (AMZN): Started as an online bookstore in 1994 and grew into one of the world’s largest retailers and cloud providers. Amazon Web Services has generated the majority of Amazon’s operating profit since 2014.
- Meta Platforms (META): Owns two of the largest social media apps (Facebook and Instagram) and two of the biggest messaging apps (WhatsApp and Messenger). Rebranded from Facebook, Inc. in 2021.
- Tesla (TSLA): Primarily an automaker, though its investments in AI, autonomous driving, and robotics are the main reason it appears in American technology company groupings.
No ETF holds exclusively FAANG or Magnificent Seven stocks, but Nasdaq-100 index funds and technology-sector ETFs include all of them among their top holdings. The NYSE FANG+ Index tracks the five original FAANG names plus five additional tech leaders.
