Largest Publicly Traded Stock Exchanges by Market Cap

Not every stock exchange in the world is itself a publicly traded company — but those that are rank among the most closely watched financial stocks. Roughly 60 major exchanges operate globally, with the NYSE and Nasdaq alone accounting for over 40% of total global market capitalization. This page focuses exclusively on the exchange operators whose own shares are listed and tradeable.

The largest publicly traded stock exchange operators span multiple continents and business models:

  • Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) — formed in 2000, ICE owns 12 regulated exchanges and marketplaces, including the New York Stock Exchange, which was founded in 1792 and remains the world’s largest stock exchange by total market capitalization of listed companies.
  • Nasdaq, Inc. (NDAQ) — founded in 1971 as the world’s first fully electronic stock market, Nasdaq operates three U.S. exchanges and seven European exchanges. It went public in 2002 and lists approximately 3,100 companies, with a strong concentration of technology stocks including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Tesla.
  • Euronext N.V. (ENX) — registered in Amsterdam and headquartered in Paris, Euronext runs exchanges in eight European countries including France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy. Its Amsterdam Stock Exchange, established in 1602, is considered the world’s oldest.
  • Japan Exchange Group (JPX) — listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange it also operates, JPX was formed from the merger of the Tokyo Stock Exchange Group and Osaka Securities Exchange, launching on January 1, 2013. It runs the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Osaka Exchange, and Tokyo Commodity Exchange.

These exchange operators trade primarily in USD, EUR, and JPY, and they generate revenue not just from trading fees but also from data services, clearing, and index licensing. Publicly traded stock exchanges are unique in that they often list on the very platforms they own and operate.
