Largest Listed Companies in Argentina by Market Cap
Nearly 90 companies trade on BYMA (Bolsas y Mercados Argentinos), Argentina’s main stock exchange formed in 2017 through the merger of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange — originally founded in 1854 — with the Mercado de Valores de Buenos Aires and the Mercado de Valores de Rosario. BYMA handles nearly 90% of all securities authorized for public offering in the country.
The S&P MERVAL index, managed jointly by S&P Dow Jones Indices and BYMA, tracks the largest and most liquid Argentine stocks. Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization with a 15% individual stock cap, and the portfolio is updated every three months.
Several of the largest listed companies in Argentina also trade as ADRs on U.S. exchanges:
- Consumer Discretionary: MercadoLibre (MELI on NASDAQ) — founded in 1999, operates online commerce and fintech platforms across Latin America
- Energy: YPF (NYSE: YPF) — established in 1922, Argentina’s integrated oil and gas company, and Transportadora de Gas del Sur (NYSE: TGS) in gas midstream
- Financials: Grupo Financiero Galicia (NASDAQ: GGAL), Banco Macro (NYSE: BMA), and Banco BBVA Argentina (NYSE: BBAR)
- Utilities: Pampa Energía (NYSE: PAM) — an integrated energy company active in electricity generation
- Basic Materials: Aluar (aluminum), Ternium Argentina (steel), and Loma Negra (cement)
All stocks on BYMA are denominated in Argentine Pesos (ARS). Argentine investors can also trade shares of global companies locally through CEDEARs — Argentinian Depositary Receipts — a structure unique to this market. Companies from the Brazilian and Chilean markets are among the regional peers often compared with Argentine stocks.
