Largest Digital Currency & Payment Solutions Companies
Coinbase, founded in 2012 by former Airbnb engineer Brian Armstrong, has grown into the largest U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange with over 108 million customers. It is just one of many publicly traded companies now building the infrastructure for digital currencies and future payment solutions — a sector that spans crypto exchanges, Bitcoin mining, stablecoins, and blockchain-enabled payment networks.
The companies in this space fall into several distinct sub-sectors:
- Crypto exchanges & custody: Coinbase (COIN) on Nasdaq, offering trading, custody, and financial tools for retail and institutional clients.
- Bitcoin treasury companies: Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy (MSTR), which adopted BTC as its primary reserve asset after purchasing Bitcoin in 2020, and Tokyo-listed Metaplanet (3350).
- Digital payments & stablecoins: Block, Inc. (SQ), whose Cash App was the first publicly traded platform to integrate Bitcoin’s Lightning Network; PayPal (PYPL), which issues the PYUSD stablecoin; and Circle (CRCL), one of the largest stablecoin providers, offering both dollar- and euro-pegged digital currencies.
- Traditional payment networks with blockchain integration: Mastercard (MA), which operates its Crypto Credential platform and provides crypto consulting services across 200+ countries.
- Bitcoin mining: MARA Holdings (MARA), Riot Platforms (RIOT), and Core Scientific, all focused on mining operations and blockchain infrastructure.
- Crypto derivatives: CME Group (CME), operator of the world’s largest financial derivatives exchange and among the first regulated venues to offer Bitcoin futures.
Several ETFs also track this space, including spot Bitcoin funds like iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), as well as blockchain-focused funds like Global X Blockchain ETF (BKCH) and Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF (BLOK).
