Largest Brokerage & Financial Firms by Market Cap

JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM), the largest bank in the United States by market capitalization, traces its origins to 1799 with the founding of the Bank of the Manhattan Company. It is just one of many brokerage and financial firms that dominate the upper tiers of the global stock market. Financial services ranks as the second-largest sector in the S&P 500, spanning everything from investment banking and prime brokerage to asset management and wealth advisory.

The sector’s history has been shaped by waves of consolidation and deregulation. When the SEC eliminated fixed brokerage commissions on May 1, 1975, ending a 183-year-old pricing regime, it opened the door to discount brokerages. Charles Schwab (NYSE: SCHW) led that revolution and later reinforced its position by acquiring TD Ameritrade.

Several sub-sectors define the brokerage and financial services space:

  • Investment banking: Goldman Sachs (founded 1869) and Morgan Stanley (formed in 1935 following the Glass–Steagall Act) remain two of the most recognized names.
  • Discount and online brokerage: Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ: IBKR), founded in 1978, provides access to securities across dozens of global markets.
  • Legacy wirehouses: The industry has consolidated into four major wirehouses — Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo Advisors, and UBS.
  • Global banking: HSBC serves customers in more than 50 markets, while ICBC, majority-owned by the Chinese government, is among the largest Asian banks.
  • Capital markets firms: CITIC Securities, headquartered in Shenzhen, is a major player in Chinese investment banking, brokerage, and wealth management.

Morgan Stanley expanded its consumer-facing business through its acquisition of the E*TRADE investment platform, while Merrill Lynch — founded in 1914 and once a pioneer in making stock ownership accessible to middle-class Americans — now operates as a wealth management division under Bank of America. Note that Fidelity Investments, launched in 1946, remains privately held and does not appear in market cap rankings.
