Coffee Sector Stocks & ETFs: How to Invest in Coffee

Coffee ranks as the second most traded commodity on the planet, grown across the “Bean Belt” between 25°N and 30°S latitude. For investors, the coffee sector spans everything from coffeehouse chains and wholesale roasters to consumer staples giants that sell packaged coffee in grocery stores worldwide.

The distinction between coffee companies matters. Starbucks (SBUX), founded in 1971 in Seattle and publicly traded since 1992, operates roughly 40,000 locations worldwide as a consumer discretionary business. Nestlé, by contrast, is the world’s largest coffee company by volume — a consumer staples company whose Nescafé, Nespresso, and Coffee Mate brands are sold in stores globally.

Other notable coffee stocks include:

  • Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) — NASDAQ-listed, formed through JAB Holdings’ acquisition of Dr Pepper Snapple; owns Keurig and Green Mountain coffee brands
  • J.M. Smucker (SJM) — NYSE-listed, corporate home of Folgers, the largest ground coffee manufacturer in the U.S.
  • Dutch Bros (BROS) — NYSE-listed drive-thru coffee chain based in Oregon, publicly traded since 2021
  • Coca-Cola (KO) — gained major coffee exposure through its acquisition of Costa Coffee
  • Black Rifle Coffee Company (BRCC) — NYSE-listed, veteran-founded direct-to-consumer coffee brand
  • Farmer Brothers (FARM) — NASDAQ-listed coffee manufacturer and distributor with large-scale roasting facilities across the U.S.

Coffee-based commodity ETFs typically invest in futures contracts tied to Arabica (traded on ICE US) or Robusta (traded on ICE Europe) benchmarks. Broader consumer staples and agriculture ETFs offer indirect exposure through the companies listed above.
