Top China Stock and Index ETFs | Chinese Market Funds
China’s equity market spans four exchanges — the Shanghai Stock Exchange (re-established in 1990), the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (founded in 1990), the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (established in 1891), and the Beijing Stock Exchange (launched in 2021). ETFs that track Chinese indices give investors a single-ticket way to access this complex, multi-layered market without navigating the A-share, B-share, and H-share class system directly.
The main benchmarks these ETFs follow include:
- CSI 300 Index: Tracks the 300 largest and most liquid A-share stocks on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges. Often considered the Chinese equivalent of the S&P 500.
- MSCI China Index: Captures large- and mid-cap stocks across A shares, H shares, Red chips, P chips, and foreign listings such as ADRs — covering roughly 85% of the China equity universe.
- Hang Seng Index: The flagship benchmark of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, where approximately half of listed companies are mainland Chinese firms.
- FTSE China A50: Tracks the 50 largest A-share companies, offering concentrated large-cap exposure.
Among U.S.-listed China ETFs, two of the most widely held are the iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI), which tracks the broad MSCI China Index and was launched in 2011, and the iShares China Large-Cap ETF (FXI), which focuses on large-cap H-shares traded in Hong Kong. For onshore A-share exposure specifically, the Xtrackers Harvest CSI 300 Index ETF (ASHR) replicates the CSI 300 directly. Internet and technology-focused funds like the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) target China’s digital economy segment.
A unique feature of the Chinese market is its share class structure. A-shares trade in CNY on mainland exchanges, H-shares trade in HKD in Hong Kong, and B-shares are quoted in USD (Shanghai) or HKD (Shenzhen). The Shanghai-Hong Kong and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect programs — the latter launched in December 2016 — have widened foreign access to mainland-listed stocks, which in turn has expanded the range of investable China ETFs.
