Best AI ETFs: List of Artificial Intelligence Sector ETFs
The term “artificial intelligence” has been used since 1955, but AI ETFs are a much newer phenomenon. These exchange-traded funds invest in companies developing AI products and services — or allocate at least 25% of their portfolio to firms with significant AI research and development spending. The category spans software platforms, semiconductor makers, robotics firms, and data infrastructure providers.
AI ETFs fall into several broad types:
- Broad AI & big data: Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (AIQ) tracks the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index across roughly 87 holdings including Samsung Electronics, Alphabet, and Micron Technology. It is considered the largest AI ETF by assets.
- Generative AI: Roundhill Generative AI & Technology ETF (CHAT) is actively managed and focuses on companies deriving at least 50% of revenue from generative AI or related tech. Top holdings include Alphabet, NVIDIA, and Microsoft.
- Robotics & physical AI: Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (BOTZ) tracks roughly 50 companies with a heavier tilt toward industrial and healthcare firms, including a sizable allocation to Japanese companies.
- AI semiconductors: VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH), launched in 2011, holds 25 stocks across the semiconductor value chain — frequently cited as an AI-adjacent play given the centrality of chips to AI workloads.
- Small-cap AI exposure: First Trust Nasdaq Artificial Intelligence and Robotics ETF (ROBT) tracks the Nasdaq CTA Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Index with roughly 110 holdings, carrying a notable proportion of smaller-cap stocks compared to peers.
- Quantum & machine learning: Defiance Quantum ETF (QTUM), launched in September 2018, holds 84 companies deriving at least half their revenue from quantum computing and machine learning activities.
Other notable funds include iShares Future AI & Tech ETF (ARTY), which tracks the Morningstar Global Artificial Intelligence Select Index across about 50 global companies, and Invesco AI and Next Gen Software ETF (IGPT), based on the STOXX World AC NexGen Software Development Index with around 100 holdings including Meta Platforms and Advanced Micro Devices.
