Largest Listed Companies in South Africa by Market Cap

Founded in 1887 during the Witwatersrand gold rush, the JSE Limited in Sandton is Africa’s most valuable stock exchange, accounting for roughly 60% of the continent’s entire equity market value. Around 400 companies are listed on the JSE, and the FTSE/JSE Top 40 Index — managed by FTSE Russell — captures the 40 largest of them, representing over 80% of total JSE market capitalization.

What makes the South African stock market unusual is how many of its heaviest-weighted names are global multinationals with dual or secondary listings. Several of the largest South African companies by market cap earn the majority of their revenues outside the country:

  • Mining & commodities: Anglo American (platinum, diamonds), BHP Group, and Glencore — all dual-listed with major international operations.
  • Technology & internet: Naspers, a media group founded in 1915, and its spin-off Prosus N.V. (primary listing on Euronext Amsterdam), which holds significant global tech investments.
  • Luxury goods: Compagnie Financière Richemont, the Swiss-listed jewellery and watch house founded by South African businessman Johann Rupert.
  • Beverages & tobacco: Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer, and British American Tobacco, both with secondary JSE listings.
  • Financial services: FirstRand and Standard Bank, two of the JSE’s largest domestically focused companies.

All South African stocks on the JSE trade in South African Rand (ZAR). The exchange originally listed only mining firms, but has since expanded across banking, retail, technology, and consumer goods. The JSE was also the first stock exchange in the world to require integrated reporting from its listed companies.
