Largest Listed Companies in Luxembourg by Market Cap

With only about 22 listed equity companies, the Luxembourg Stock Exchange (LuxSE) is one of Europe’s smallest equity markets — yet it hosts over 37,000 securities listings in total, making it a global heavyweight in bond and debt markets. Established in 1928, the LuxSE was the first exchange in the world to list a Eurobond, back in 1963, and the first to list a green bond, in 2007.

Trading takes place in euros through Euronext’s Universal Trading Platform, under the supervision of the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF). The benchmark LuxX Index tracks the nine most valuable listed stocks by free-float market capitalization, set at a base of 1,000 on 4 January 1999 — the day Luxembourg adopted the euro.

The largest listed companies in Luxembourg span a handful of distinct sectors:

  • Steel & Mining: ArcelorMittal, headquartered in Luxembourg City, formed from the merger of Arcelor and Mittal Steel in 2007
  • Stainless & Specialty Steel: Aperam, spun out of ArcelorMittal in 2011, listed on multiple European exchanges
  • Satellite Communications: SES, a satellite operator headquartered in Luxembourg
  • Media & Broadcasting: RTL Group, Europe’s leading entertainment network
  • Investment Holdings: Reinet Investments, an investment holding company listed on the LuxSE

Beyond equities, approximately 40% of all cross-border securities in Europe are listed in Luxembourg, and over 70 countries list sovereign debt there. The LuxSE also operates the Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX), the first dedicated platform globally for green financial instruments, launched in 2016.
