Best Australia Equity & Index ETFs: Top ASX Funds Listed

The S&P/ASX 200, maintained by Standard & Poor’s, tracks the 200 largest stocks on the Australian Securities Exchange and covers about 82% of Australia’s total share market capitalisation. Most Australia equity ETFs use this benchmark — or the broader S&P/ASX 300 — to give holders exposure to the largest listed companies in Australia, all traded in Australian dollars.

The ASX itself was formed in 1987 through an amalgamation of six state securities exchanges and lists over 2,000 companies. Financial services and basic materials — led by names like Commonwealth Bank, BHP, Westpac, and Rio Tinto — account for roughly half of the S&P/ASX 200’s weight. Healthcare (CSL, Cochlear), major retailers (Woolworths, Coles), and telecommunications (Telstra) round out the top holdings.

Australia index ETFs differ mainly in breadth and strategy:

  • S&P/ASX 200 trackers: Funds like the iShares Core S&P/ASX 200 ETF (IOZ) and SPDR S&P/ASX 200 Fund (STW) replicate the 200-stock benchmark, though concentration is notable — almost one third of assets sit in the top five holdings.
  • S&P/ASX 300 trackers: The Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF (VAS) follows the S&P/ASX 300, adding up to 100 additional small-cap stocks beyond the ASX 200.
  • Dividend-focused and ESG funds: Specialised Australia equity ETFs screen for high-yield or sustainability criteria within the same ASX universe.

The S&P/ASX 200 rebalances quarterly in March, June, September, and December. ETFs and Listed Investment Companies are excluded from the index. A committee from S&P and ASX selects constituents based on float-adjusted market capitalisation and minimum liquidity thresholds.
