Most Traded ETFs by Volume | Live Table & Full List

On January 29, 1993, a group of financial executives rang the opening bell at the American Stock Exchange to launch the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) — the first ETF ever listed in the United States. More than three decades later, SPY remains the most heavily traded ETF in the world, trading at a higher daily volume than even the largest individual stock in the S&P 500.

The concept of an exchange-traded fund originated in Canada in 1990. What started as a single product tracking a broad stock index has since expanded to more than 14,000 ETFs globally, covering equities, bonds, commodities, currencies, and thematic strategies. Unlike mutual funds, ETFs trade throughout the day on stock exchanges at fluctuating market prices.

The most traded ETFs by options and share volume span several categories:

  • Broad U.S. equity: SPY (SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust), QQQ (Invesco QQQ Trust tracking the Nasdaq-100)
  • Small caps: IWM (iShares Russell 2000 ETF)
  • Leveraged & inverse: TQQQ (ProShares UltraPro QQQ 3x), SQQQ (ProShares UltraPro Short QQQ –3x)
  • Fixed income: TLT (iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF), HYG (iShares High Yield Corporate Bond ETF)
  • Commodities: GLD (SPDR Gold Shares), SLV (iShares Silver Trust)
  • International: EEM (iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF)

ETF liquidity is maintained through a creation and redemption mechanism involving authorized participants — large institutional firms that assemble or disassemble baskets of underlying securities in blocks of roughly 50,000 shares. This process keeps an ETF’s market price closely aligned with the net asset value of its holdings.
