Largest Listed Companies in Turkey by Market Capitalization

Securities trading in Istanbul dates back to 1866, when the Ottoman Empire established its first market for government bonds. The modern Istanbul Stock Exchange was founded in 1986, and its successor — Borsa İstanbul (BIST) — was incorporated in 2013, unifying equities, derivatives, and the gold exchange under a single entity. Today, more than 400 companies trade on BIST in Turkish Lira (TRY).

The most widely followed benchmark is the BIST 100 (ticker XU100), a capitalization-weighted index that tracks 100 companies drawn from the National Market, REITs, and venture capital investment trusts. The largest Turkish companies by market capitalization span several sectors:

  • Financials: QNB Finansbank, Türkiye Garanti Bankası, Akbank — banks consistently rank among the heaviest-weighted names on the exchange.
  • Industrials & Conglomerates: Koç Holding operates across energy, automotive, consumer durables, and finance; Sabancı Holding follows a similar multi-sector model.
  • Defense: Aselsan, a defense electronics manufacturer covering radar, unmanned systems, and air defense technology.
  • Airlines & Energy: Türk Hava Yolları (Turkish Airlines) and TÜPRAŞ, Turkey’s major oil refiner.
  • Consumer & Auto: BİM, the country’s leading grocery retailer, and Ford Otosan — a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Koç Holding, founded in 1959.

Borsa İstanbul also maintains BIST Participation indices (30, 50, and 100), which select companies meeting Sharia-compliant criteria — reflecting Turkey’s dual conventional and Islamic finance structure. For international exposure, the iShares MSCI Turkey ETF (TUR) tracks Turkish equities on NASDAQ. Those interested in how Turkey’s banks compare to European peers or where Turkish Airlines stands among the world’s largest airlines can explore those dedicated pages.
