List of Bitcoin ETFs: Spot & Futures Bitcoin ETF Funds
On January 10, 2024, the SEC approved 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs — the first in U.S. history — after rejecting more than 20 similar applications over the preceding years. That approval, triggered by a landmark court ruling that called the SEC’s prior rejections “arbitrary and capricious,” transformed Bitcoin ETFs from a niche futures-only category into one of the most watched product launches in fund history.
Bitcoin ETFs fall into two categories:
- Spot Bitcoin ETFs hold actual BTC in secure custody (typically cold storage) and track the real-time spot price. Most use Coinbase Custody as their custodian, while Fidelity relies on its own Fidelity Digital Assets service.
- Bitcoin futures ETFs hold futures contracts traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) rather than Bitcoin itself. These funds can drift from Bitcoin’s spot price over time due to contango — a situation where rolling expiring contracts into new ones incurs a cost.
The originally approved spot Bitcoin ETFs trade on NYSE Arca, Nasdaq, or Cboe BZX Exchange. Notable funds include:
- iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) — BlackRock’s spot fund, with Coinbase as crypto custodian and BNY Mellon handling cash custody
- Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) — uses Fidelity’s proprietary digital asset custody
- Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) — the former closed-end trust that converted to an ETF after Grayscale’s legal victory against the SEC
- ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) — a partnership between Ark Invest and Swiss-based 21Shares AG
- VanEck Bitcoin Trust (HODL) — its ticker references a famous 2013 BitcoinTalk forum misspelling of “hold”
- ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) — the first-ever SEC-approved Bitcoin ETF, launched in October 2021 as a futures-based fund
Grayscale also launched a separate lower-cost “mini” Bitcoin ETF (ticker: BTC) by spinning out a portion of GBTC’s assets. For broader digital asset exposure, see the full list of cryptocurrency ETFs, or explore Ethereum ETFs and public companies investing in Bitcoin.
