Largest Listed Companies in the Czech Republic by Market Cap

Originally founded in 1871, the Prague Stock Exchange (PSE) was reopened in 1993 after a fifty-year hiatus caused by World War II and the Communist era. Around 61 companies have their shares admitted to trading on the PSE, making it a concentrated but well-defined market. The exchange is a subsidiary of Wiener Börse AG and uses the XETRA® Prague trading system operated by Deutsche Börse AG.

The main benchmark is the PX index, a free-float weighted price index comprising 12 of the most liquid stocks. It was launched with a base value of 1,000 points on 5 April 1994, and its constituent weights are capped quarterly so no single company exceeds 20% of the index. You can explore the full index composition on our PX index page.

The largest Czech companies by market capitalization span a handful of well-defined sectors:

  • Banking & Finance: Erste Group Bank (founded 1819), Komerční Banka (part of the Société Générale Group), MONETA Money Bank, and Vienna Insurance Group.
  • Energy: ČEZ, the energy conglomerate founded in 1992 during Czechoslovakia’s privatization — consistently the market heavyweight.
  • Telecommunications: O2 Czech Republic, the largest internet connection and IP TV provider in the country.
  • Consumer Goods: Philip Morris ČR, which manufactures tobacco products and exports from Kutná Hora to dozens of countries, and Kofola, a popular Czech beverage company.
  • Industrials & Defense: Colt CZ Group (Česká zbrojovka), a firearms manufacturer with roots dating back to 1936 and significant exports to the USA.

All trading on the PSE is conducted in Czech Crowns (CZK), and the exchange operates four market segments — Prime, Standard, Free, and START — with the START market designed specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises. For a broader look at the exchange including smaller listings, see our full Prague Stock Exchange list. Czech dividend payers are covered separately in our Czech dividend stock list.
