Self-Driving Technology Stocks: Leading Autonomous Vehicle Companies
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines six levels of driving automation, from Level 0 (fully manual) to Level 5 (fully autonomous). No system has yet achieved full autonomy across all conditions, but Level 4 — where vehicles drive themselves without human input within specific geofenced areas — is already commercially deployed. Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, operates Level 4 robotaxis in cities such as Phoenix and San Francisco, while Baidu’s Apollo Go runs fully driverless rides across more than 20 cities in China.
Three technology pillars make self-driving possible: sensors, semiconductors, and software. Cameras, radar, and LiDAR provide environmental perception; AI chips from companies like NVIDIA process that data in real time; and decision-making software from firms like Waymo and Pony.ai translates perception into vehicle control. Notably, Tesla takes a different path, relying on a camera-only vision approach rather than LiDAR.
The two segments generating the most near-term commercial activity are robotaxis and autonomous trucking. Trucking is considered especially suited for early deployment due to its predictable highway routes and limited variables.
Key self-driving technology companies by segment:
- Tech platforms & robotaxis: Alphabet (GOOGL) via Waymo, Amazon (AMZN) via Zoox, Baidu (BIDU) via Apollo Go, Uber (UBER) through AV partnerships
- Semiconductors & hardware: NVIDIA (NVDA) with its Drive platform, Qualcomm (QCOM) with its Snapdragon Digital Chassis, Mobileye (MBLY) for vision-based ADAS, and Hesai Group (HSAI) as a leading LiDAR provider
- Automakers with AV programs: Tesla (TSLA) developing its Cybercab robotaxi and Full Self-Driving software, General Motors (GM) which acquired Cruise, and Toyota (TM) partnering with Waymo
- Pure-play autonomous driving: Aurora Innovation (AUR) focused on interstate freight, and WeRide (WRD) operating across multiple geographies
Most of these self-driving stocks trade on the NASDAQ or NYSE, making them accessible to a broad range of investors. The sector sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and automotive manufacturing — each layer contributing distinct technology to the autonomous vehicle stack.
