Invest in Nanotechnology: Leading Stocks and ETFs

Nanotechnology — the manipulation of matter at scales smaller than 100 nanometers — cuts across semiconductors, medicine, energy, and advanced materials. By tailoring structures at the atomic level, engineers can make materials stronger, lighter, more durable, or more conductive, enabling applications from targeted drug delivery to smaller, faster transistors.

The nanotechnology stocks and ETFs listed on this page span several distinct areas:

  • Semiconductors & computing: Nanotechnology has driven transistors to ever-smaller dimensions, enabling faster and more portable electronics.
  • Healthcare & nanomedicine: Near-atom-sized particles allow more precise drug delivery, faster diagnostics, and new vaccine delivery methods such as aerosols and transdermal patches.
  • Advanced materials: Nano-engineered products — including carbon nanotubes used in bike frames, bulletproof vests, and sailboat hulls — improve heat resistance, strength, and conductivity in manufacturing.
  • Energy & environment: Nanotech enables low-cost detection and treatment of water impurities, along with improvements in rechargeable batteries and thin-film solar panels.
  • Automotive: Nano-engineered materials contribute to high-power battery systems, low-rolling-resistance tires, and high-efficiency sensors.

Two dedicated nanotechnology ETFs trade on NYSE Arca. The ProShares Nanotechnology ETF (TINY) tracks the Solactive Nanotechnology Index, with a portfolio weighted heavily toward technology stocks alongside healthcare and basic materials names. The Direxion Nanotechnology ETF (TYNE) tracks the S&P Kensho Extended Nanotechnology Index, which leans more toward healthcare companies working with nanoscale processes. Both index methodologies use algorithmic scanning of company filings to classify firms as “core” or “non-core” nanotechnology participants.

For broader thematic exposure, the SPDR S&P Kensho New Economies Composite ETF (KOMP) includes nanotechnology as one sub-theme alongside autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, and genetic engineering — though it is not a pure-play nanotech fund.
