ASEAN Stock & Index ETFs: Southeast Asia Investing Funds
Seven stock exchanges — from the Singapore Exchange to the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange — form the ASEAN Exchanges collaboration, with roughly 4,500 companies listed across the region. ASEAN stock and index ETFs bundle the largest of these companies into single funds, giving exposure to six Southeast Asian economies through one trade.
The main regional benchmarks are the FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index and the MSCI ASEAN Index. The FTSE/ASEAN 40 tracks the 40 largest and most liquid stocks from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, while the MSCI ASEAN Index covers approximately 159 constituents across those same countries plus Vietnam.
Notable ASEAN ETFs include:
- Global X FTSE Southeast Asia ETF (ASEA) — listed on the NYSE, tracks the FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index. Launched in 2011 and issued by Mirae Asset Global Investments under the Global X brand.
- CIMB FTSE ASEAN 40 — listed on the Singapore Exchange, also tracking the FTSE/ASEAN 40.
- CIMB FTSE ASEAN 40 Malaysia — listed on Bursa Malaysia, offering local-currency access to the same index.
Financials represent a large share of ASEAN market capitalization, and fund weightings tend to tilt heavily toward Singaporean and Malaysian firms. MSCI classifies Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand as Emerging Markets, Singapore as a Developed Market, and Vietnam as a Frontier Market — so a single ASEAN ETF spans all three market tiers.
For broader regional exposure, see Asia-focused ETFs or emerging markets ETFs. An ESG variant also exists: the FTSE4Good ASEAN 5 Index screens constituents from five ASEAN exchanges on environmental, social, and governance criteria.
