Best Technology ETFs: Top Tech Sector Funds Listed

Technology is one of the 11 sectors defined by the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS), and it has spawned one of the deepest selections of sector-focused ETFs available. These funds cover everything from broad U.S. tech exposure — spanning software, semiconductors, IT services, and hardware — to narrow sub-sector plays targeting chipmakers, cybersecurity, or cloud computing.

One important distinction: GICS sector definitions don’t always match popular perception. Companies like Alphabet (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), and Netflix (NFLX) are classified under Communication Services, not Information Technology, so they are excluded from most pure tech ETFs like XLK and VGT.

Technology ETFs generally fall into three tiers:

  • Sector-level funds — Broad exposure to all GICS-classified tech companies. Examples include the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK), launched in December 1998 and one of the oldest tech ETFs in existence, as well as the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) with roughly 319 holdings across large, mid, and small caps, and the Fidelity MSCI Information Technology Index ETF (FTEC) with around 285 holdings including micro-cap names.
  • Industry-level funds — Focused on a single industry within tech, such as the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH), which tracks the 25 largest U.S.-listed semiconductor companies.
  • Thematic funds — Non-standardized, trend-driven products targeting areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, or cloud technology.

The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), which tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index, is often grouped with tech ETFs even though it isn’t a pure-play tech fund. More than 60% of QQQ’s weight sits in the technology sector, and its top ten holdings account for over half of total assets.

Among pure sector funds, XLK holds around 68 large-cap stocks with heavy concentration in Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia, while VGT and FTEC reach deeper into mid- and small-cap territory. For those seeking equal weighting rather than market-cap dominance, the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Technology ETF (RSPT) allocates equally across its constituents.
