Best European ETFs: Top Eurozone & Pan-European Funds
Four major indices — the EURO STOXX 50, MSCI Europe, STOXX Europe 600, and MSCI Europe Small Cap — form the backbone of European equity ETF investing, tracked by 29 ETFs available on European exchanges. All are structured as UCITS funds, the standard regulatory format for retail investors across EU member states.
The EURO STOXX 50, introduced on 26 February 1998 and managed by STOXX (a Deutsche Börse Group subsidiary), holds 50 blue-chip stocks from eight Eurozone countries. France and Germany together account for the largest share of the index, with top components including ASML and LVMH. The MSCI Europe Index is broader, covering approximately 404 large- and mid-cap constituents across 15 developed European countries — including non-Eurozone markets like the UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
For the widest pan-European coverage, the STOXX Europe 600 spans 600 large-, mid-, and small-cap companies across 17 countries, often described as Europe’s equivalent to the S&P 500. The MSCI Europe Small Cap Index adds approximately 819 smaller constituents covering about 14% of the European free-float market.
Key European ETFs by index tracked:
- EURO STOXX 50 trackers: Among the most popular Eurozone ETFs, backed by highly liquid Eurex-traded futures and options. See the full list of Euro Stoxx 50 ETFs here.
- STOXX Europe 600 trackers: Amundi Core Stoxx Europe 600 UCITS ETF Acc (MEUDN) is one of the most widely held pan-European funds.
- MSCI Europe trackers: Currently tracked by 17 ETFs, offering broad developed-market exposure beyond the Eurozone.
- Small-cap European ETFs: Funds tracking the MSCI Europe Small Cap Index provide access to domestic-oriented companies outside the blue-chip universe.
Most European UCITS ETFs are domiciled in Ireland or Luxembourg for tax and regulatory efficiency. They come in two share class types: accumulating (dividends reinvested, marked “Acc”) and distributing (dividends paid out, marked “Dis” or “Dist”). EUR-denominated share classes allow Eurozone-based investors to avoid currency exchange concerns.
Beyond equities, European ETFs also cover fixed income, commodities, and alternative asset classes across the continent.
