Largest Agricultural Companies by Market Capitalization

Cargill, the world’s largest agricultural company by revenue, is privately held — which means Deere & Company (NYSE: DE), the maker of John Deere tractors and combines, typically leads the publicly traded agricultural sector by market capitalization. Across global exchanges, roughly 983 listed agriculture companies compete in a sector where demand stays relatively stable regardless of economic cycles, yet stock prices often move with commodity markets.

The agricultural sector spans several distinct sub-sectors, each with its own market leaders:

  • Farm equipment: Deere & Company holds approximately 53% of the U.S. tractor market, making it the dominant force in agricultural machinery.
  • Seeds & crop protection: Corteva Agriscience (NYSE: CTVA), created from the DuPont-Dow merger and subsequent split in 2019, is considered the closest thing to a pure-play agriculture stock.
  • Fertilizers: Nutrien (NYSE: NTR), formed through the 2018 merger of Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan and Agrium, is the world’s largest potash producer. CF Industries (NYSE: CF) and The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS) also rank among the top fertilizer makers.
  • Commodity trading & processing: Archer-Daniels-Midland (NYSE: ADM) and Bunge Global (NYSE: BG) are two of the four so-called “ABCD” giants — alongside private firms Cargill and Louis Dreyfus — that together handle an estimated 70% of global food trade.
  • Edible oils & palm oil: Wilmar International (SGX: F34), headquartered in Singapore, is a major player in palm oil cultivation, sugar, and biodiesel.

Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto in 2018 further consolidated the seeds and herbicide market, with the German-listed company now a significant force in agri-inputs. Most of the largest agricultural companies trade in USD on the NYSE, though Nutrien also lists on the TSX in Canadian dollars. ETFs with tickers like MOO (VanEck Agribusiness ETF) and VEGI (iShares MSCI Agriculture Producers ETF) offer broad exposure to the sector — see our full list of agriculture and farming ETFs for more.
