Largest Aircraft Manufacturers by Market Capitalization
Only about 18 aircraft manufacturers trade on public stock exchanges worldwide, and just two of them — Airbus and Boeing — focus exclusively on large commercial jets, forming a de facto duopoly in that segment. The United States accounts for six of the top ten aircraft manufacturers by market capitalization, supported by the world’s largest defense budget.
Aircraft manufacturing spans several distinct segments beyond commercial passenger planes:
- Commercial aviation: Airbus (AIR, Euronext Paris), founded in 1970 and legally headquartered in the Netherlands, produces the A320 narrowbody family. Boeing (BA, NYSE), founded in 1916 in what is now Arlington, Virginia, builds the competing 737 family and is the largest U.S. exporter by dollar value.
- Defense & military: Lockheed Martin (LMT, NYSE), formed from the 1995 merger of Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta, is the world’s largest defense contractor. Its aircraft programs include the F-35 and F-22 fighters. India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) produces the Tejas fighter and is developing the fifth-generation AMCA.
- Business jets: Dassault Aviation (Euronext Paris) and Bombardier (TSX) focus on executive aircraft, with Bombardier’s lineup including the Challenger and Global series.
- Regional aviation: Embraer (ERJ, NYSE), headquartered near São Paulo, is recognized as the third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer, known for its E-Jet family that underpins regional air travel across multiple continents.
- Industrial conglomerates: Textron (TXT, NYSE) spans helicopters, aircraft manufacturing, and transportation vehicles.
State-owned manufacturers like China’s COMAC and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation are not publicly listed and therefore do not appear in market cap rankings. The industry is defined by massive capital requirements, intense regulatory scrutiny, and certification timelines that can stretch three to seven years for new systems.
