Largest Maritime Shipping Companies by Market Cap

Maritime transport handles over 80% of international trade, carried by a global merchant fleet of more than 106,700 vessels — including container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, and general cargo ships. The publicly listed companies behind this fleet trade on exchanges from Nasdaq Copenhagen and Frankfurt to the Tokyo Stock Exchange and NYSE.

The sector breaks down into several distinct sub-sectors:

  • Container shipping: A.P. Møller – Mærsk (founded in 1904 in Denmark), Hapag-Lloyd (formed from a 1970 merger of two 19th-century German shipping lines), Evergreen Marine (established in Taiwan in 1968), COSCO SHIPPING Holdings, and ZIM Integrated Shipping.
  • Integrated shipping: Japan’s Nippon Yusen (NYK Line), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), all listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, combine container operations with bulk, energy transport, and other services.
  • Tankers and LNG carriers: Companies transporting crude oil, refined products, chemicals, and liquefied natural gas aboard specialized vessels.
  • Dry bulk carriers: Firms moving heavy commodities such as coal, iron ore, and grain — cargoes where water transport is the most cost-effective option.

Shipping is a capital-intensive, highly cyclical industry. Companies fund large fleets through significant upfront investment and earn revenue through a mix of volatile spot rates and longer-term contract rates. Private giants like MSC and CMA CGM rank among the world’s largest carriers but are not publicly listed, so they do not appear in market cap rankings.

Geographically, listed maritime shipping companies cluster in Asia — particularly Japan, China, and South Korea — and in European shipping centers such as Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Greece. Greece alone accounts for nearly 18% of global carrying capacity by deadweight tonnage.
