Largest European Car Manufacturers by Market Capitalization
Carl Benz built what is considered the first modern automobile in 1886, and Europe has remained at the center of the global car industry ever since. The largest European car manufacturers trade primarily on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and Euronext, with several also carrying ADR listings in the United States. The STOXX® Europe 600 Automobiles & Parts index (SXAP) tracks the sector using the ICB classification.
Germany dominates the European auto market. The major publicly listed manufacturers include:
- Volkswagen Group — founded in 1937, headquartered in Wolfsburg, and selling vehicles under the VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley, SEAT, Škoda, and Cupra brands, among others. VW has held the largest market share in Europe for over two decades.
- Mercedes-Benz — based in Stuttgart, focused on the luxury segment after dropping several lower-priced combustion models to concentrate on top-of-the-range vehicles.
- BMW — founded in 1916 in Munich, home to the BMW, Mini Cooper, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad brands. Part of the “German Big Three” alongside Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
- Porsche AG — also based in Stuttgart, listed on Frankfurt under the ticker P911. The company’s origins trace to 1931, when Ferdinand Porsche founded the firm that would later design the Volkswagen Beetle.
- Ferrari — headquartered in Maranello, Italy, and listed on the NYSE under ticker RACE as well as on Euronext Milan. Spun off from Fiat Chrysler in 2015, Ferrari is often analyzed as a luxury goods company due to its pricing power.
- Stellantis — formed in 2021 through the merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler, now operating 14 brands including Peugeot, Fiat, Jeep, Citroën, Opel, Dodge, and Maserati, with shares traded in Milan, Paris, and New York.
Most European automaker stocks trade in EUR, though Ferrari’s primary listing is in USD on the NYSE. For a broader view, see the global auto manufacturers ranking or the dedicated page for German car manufacturers.
