ASML, founded in 1984 in the Netherlands, holds a near-monopoly on extreme ultraviolet lithography machines — the equipment that the world’s leading chipmakers depend on to manufacture advanced microchips. It is regularly among the largest European companies by market capitalization, alongside names like Novo Nordisk, LVMH, and SAP.

The broadest European benchmark is the STOXX Europe 600 (ticker: SXXP), introduced in 1998, which tracks 600 large-, mid-, and small-cap companies across 17 European countries. The EURO STOXX 50 is another widely followed index, covering 50 blue-chip eurozone stocks. Prosus, spun off from South Africa’s Naspers and listed on Euronext Amsterdam, also regularly appears among the largest European companies thanks to its significant stake in Chinese tech giant Tencent.
