Largest Insurance Companies by Market Capitalization
Berkshire Hathaway entered the insurance business in 1967 by acquiring National Indemnity Company, and its subsidiaries — GEICO, Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group, and General Re — now make it one of the two largest insurance companies in the world by market capitalization. The other top spot is typically held by a Chinese insurer, reflecting how the industry’s biggest players are split between the United States and Asia.
The insurance sector is organized around three main business lines: property and casualty (P&C), life and annuity, and private health insurance. Reinsurance — where one insurer indemnifies another against losses — is a distinct category with roots tracing back to the late 14th century. Insurance brokers such as Marsh & McLennan, Aon, and Willis Towers Watson sit alongside these groups, connecting insurers with clients rather than underwriting risk directly.
Among the structural leaders by market cap:
- Life & Health: AIA Group (founded in 1919, listed on the HKEX), Ping An Insurance (Shanghai SSE / HKEX), and China Life Insurance (HKEX / NYSE ADR)
- Health Insurance: UnitedHealth Group (NYSE) and Elevance Health (NYSE), which distributes plans through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield
- P&C and Diversified: Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE), whose GEICO subsidiary was founded in 1936, and Germany-based Allianz Group (Frankfurt / Xetra), serving more than 126 million customers across over 70 countries
- Reinsurance: Gen Re, originally formed in 1921 and acquired by Berkshire Hathaway in 1998
