Largest Listed Companies in Hungary by Market Capitalization
Founded on 18 January 1864 on the banks of the Danube in Pest, the Budapest Stock Exchange (BSE) ranks as the third largest stock exchange in Central and Eastern Europe by market capitalization and liquidity. Re-established in 1990, the BSE lists around 71 companies and trades exclusively in Hungarian Forint (HUF). The Hungarian National Bank holds an 81.35% equity stake in the exchange.
The BUX index — a free-floating, capitalization-weighted total return index — tracks the performance of up to 25 of the largest Hungarian companies on the BSE’s Equities Prime Market. It was one of the first indices in the world to adopt free-float capitalization weightings, doing so in October 1999. The main sectors and leading names include:
- Banking: OTP Bank — the largest commercial bank in Hungary, operating across 11 countries in Central and Eastern Europe
- Energy: MOL Group — an integrated oil and gas company with exploration, production, and refining across the region
- Pharmaceuticals: Gedeon Richter — one of the largest pharmaceutical firms in Central and Eastern Europe, with 31.35% of shares held by the Hungarian state
- Telecommunications: Magyar Telekom — the Hungarian subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom
- Banking: MBH Bank — another major commercial bank listed on the BSE
Notably, the Budapest Stock Exchange itself went public on 21 June 2023, on the 33rd anniversary of its re-establishment. The only ETF that tracks the BUX index is the Expat Hungary BUX UCITS ETF (ticker: HUBE), listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange’s Xetra segment.
