Largest Listed Companies in Iceland by Market Cap
With only about 27 stocks on its main market, Nasdaq Iceland is one of Europe’s smallest exchanges — but it covers a surprisingly broad range of sectors. Established in 1985 on the initiative of the Central Bank of Iceland, the exchange began trading Icelandic government bonds in 1986 and listed its first equities in 1991. It became part of the Nasdaq family following acquisitions in 2006 and 2007.
The benchmark OMX Iceland 15 (OMXI15) index tracks the largest and most traded stocks on the exchange. Key sectors and companies include:
- Industrials: Marel hf., a global provider of food processing equipment, is by far the largest listed company in Iceland and has been dual-listed on Euronext Amsterdam since 2019.
- Banking: Arion Banki hf. and Íslandsbanki hf. (founded in 1875) are the two main banks, both successors to institutions that collapsed during the 2008 financial crisis.
- Healthcare: Össur hf., founded in 1971, specializes in prosthetics and orthopaedic devices and is also listed on Nasdaq Copenhagen.
- Airlines & Tourism: Icelandair Group hf. operates Iceland’s national carrier.
- Retail & Telecom: Festi hf., Hagar hf., and Síminn hf. serve the domestic consumer and communications markets.
All trading on Nasdaq Iceland is conducted in Icelandic Króna (ISK). Because of the small size of the Icelandic economy, many listed stocks are relatively small and illiquid compared to those on Nordic peers like Norway or Sweden.
