Largest Listed Companies in Singapore by Market Cap
Three banks — DBS Group Holdings, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC), and United Overseas Bank (UOB) — collectively make up over half the FTSE Straits Times Index and rank as the largest banks in Southeast Asia. Their dominance says a great deal about the character of the Singapore stock market, where financials set the tone.
All three trade on the Singapore Exchange (SGX), a holding company formed on 1 December 1999 from the merger of the Stock Exchange of Singapore, SIMEX, and SCCS. SGX is ASEAN’s second-largest market by capitalization, and it became the world’s largest clearer of iron ore swaps — an unusual distinction for an exchange also known for its deep REIT listings.
Beyond banking, the largest Singaporean companies span several sectors:
- Telecommunications: Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel), the city-state’s flagship telco.
- Industrials & aerospace: Singapore Technologies Engineering (ST Engineering) and Keppel Ltd, a conglomerate focused on infrastructure.
- Aviation: Singapore Airlines (SIA), one of the largest airlines in the world by market cap.
- E-commerce & gaming: Sea Limited, incorporated in Singapore but primarily listed on the NYSE, operates the Shopee marketplace and gaming platform Garena.
- Real estate: Singapore is widely regarded as the REIT hub of Asia, with trusts like Mapletree Logistics Trust and CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust distributing over 90% of taxable income.
The benchmark FTSE Straits Times Index (STI) tracks the top 30 companies listed on the SGX Mainboard. It dates back to 1966 and is jointly calculated by SGX, SPH Media Trust, and FTSE Group. Two ETFs listed on the SGX track the STI: the SPDR Straits Times Index ETF (SGX: ES3) and the Nikko AM STI ETF (SGX: G3B). Stocks on SGX trade primarily in Singapore dollars, though dual-currency trading in USD is also available.
Some STI constituents are foreign-based — Thai Beverage, for instance, generates the bulk of its revenue in Thailand. This international mix is typical of a market that serves as a gateway to the broader Asian equities space.
