Largest Publicly Traded Football Clubs by Market Cap

Tottenham Hotspur became the first football club to go public when it listed its shares in 1983. A wave of football IPOs followed in the late 1990s, but most clubs have since delisted — particularly in England. Today, only around 20 football clubs trade on public stock exchanges, and just three of Deloitte’s top 20 revenue-generating clubs are among them.

The publicly traded football clubs are spread across several European exchanges:

  • Manchester United (NYSE: MANU): Founded in 1878, the club originally listed on the London Stock Exchange before being taken private and then relisted on the New York Stock Exchange in 2012. It holds 20 league titles and three European Cups.
  • Juventus (BIT: JUVE): The Turin-based club, founded in 1897, listed on the Borsa Italiana in 2001. The Agnelli family, who gained control in 1923, continue to hold a majority stake.
  • Borussia Dortmund (XETRA: BVB): Listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since 2000, BVB remains the only publicly traded football club in Germany. Its shares are largely held by fans.
  • Turkish clubs: Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş, and Trabzonspor all trade on Borsa Istanbul, making Turkey the country with the most listed football clubs.
  • Portuguese clubs: Benfica, FC Porto, and Sporting CP are all listed on Euronext Lisbon.
  • Other clubs: SS Lazio and AS Roma trade on the Borsa Italiana, while AFC Ajax is listed on Euronext Amsterdam.

Football stock valuations can be extremely volatile, driven by sporting outcomes, player transfers, and broader business developments. Borussia Dortmund, for example, also generates revenue from travel services, hotel bookings, and a medical rehabilitation centre — activities well beyond the pitch.
