Nintendo, founded in 1889 as a playing card company in Kyoto, is the oldest active video game company in the world — and still one of the largest. The gaming industry spans console, PC, mobile, and cloud segments, with the biggest publicly traded companies headquartered in the United States, China, Japan, and Europe.
Three console makers — Sony (PlayStation), Microsoft (Xbox), and Nintendo (Switch) — anchor the hardware side, while publishers and platform companies compete for audiences across every screen. The top video game companies by market cap include names from several distinct sub-sectors:
- Console & franchise publishers: Nintendo (Super Mario, Zelda), Sony Interactive Entertainment (God of War, PlayStation exclusives), Microsoft (Call of Duty, Halo, Minecraft after acquiring Activision Blizzard)
- Chinese gaming giants: Tencent, the world’s largest game publisher by revenue, holds stakes in dozens of studios globally; NetEase publishes titles like Knives Out and Identity V
- Western publishers: Electronic Arts (EA Sports, Battlefield, Mass Effect), Take-Two Interactive (Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption via Rockstar Games, NBA 2K via 2K)
- Platforms & user-generated content: Roblox operates a user-generated gaming platform listed on the NYSE
- European developers: Ubisoft, headquartered in France and listed on Euronext Paris, is the largest video game company in Europe, known for Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six
Free-to-play formats now dominate much of the market, pairing zero entry fees with cosmetic microtransactions. The industry is highly consolidated, with frequent mergers and acquisitions reshaping the competitive field. Video games compete directly with movies, music, and television for consumer attention and spending. South Korean companies like Nexon, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, add further geographic breadth to the sector.
