List of Companies in the CAC 40 Index

The CAC 40 Index tracks the performance of the 40 largest and most liquid French companies listed on Euronext Paris. These companies, often referred to as French blue chips, represent a significant portion of the total market capitalization of the French stock market. The Consumer Goods sector, particularly Luxury and Personal Goods, traditionally forms a major part of the index, with significant contributions also coming from the Financial Services, Industrials, and Energy sectors.

The largest companies within the index, such as LVMH, L’Oréal, TotalEnergies, Hermès International, and BNP Paribas, hold a substantial share of the index’s total market capitalization. Consequently, their performance has a significant impact on the overall movement of the CAC 40.

Inclusion in the CAC 40 requires meeting strict criteria. A company must be listed on Euronext Paris and demonstrate high stock liquidity through intensive trading volume. Its registered office or main operational activity must be in France, and it must meet stringent free float requirements, ensuring a significant portion of its shares are publicly tradable. Financial stability and profitability according to international accounting standards are mandatory, and the company must publish its financial results and reports in English.

The composition of the CAC 40 is not fixed. An independent Steering Committee regularly reviews and updates its composition. Companies that no longer meet the criteria, for example due to a decline in value, liquidity, or profitability, may be removed and replaced by others that qualify.

The CAC 40 Index serves as the foundation for many popular investment products, particularly Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) such as the Amundi CAC 40 UCITS ETF (C40) or Lyxor CAC 40 UCITS ETF (CAC). These ETFs allow investors to gain exposure to this broad segment of the French equity market easily and cost-effectively. Alongside the main CAC 40, other significant French indices include the CAC Next 20 (next largest 20 companies) and the SBF 120 (broad index covering 120 companies).
