List of Companies in the DAX 40 Index
The DAX 40 Index tracks the performance of the 40 largest and most liquid German companies listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. These companies, often referred to as German blue chips, represent a significant portion of the total market capitalization of the German stock market. The Industrial sector traditionally forms the largest and most influential part of the index, with significant contributions also coming from the Consumer Goods and Technology sectors.
The largest companies within the index, such as SAP, Siemens, Allianz, Deutsche Börse, and Volkswagen, hold a substantial share of the index’s total market capitalization. Consequently, their performance has a significant impact on the overall movement of the DAX.
Inclusion in the DAX 40 requires meeting strict criteria. A company must be listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in the Prime Standard segment and demonstrate high stock liquidity through intensive trading volume. Its registered office or main operational activity must be in Germany, and it must meet stringent free float requirements, ensuring a significant portion of its shares are publicly tradable. Financial stability and profitability according to international accounting standards are mandatory, and the company must publish its financial results and reports in English.
The composition of the DAX 40 is not fixed. Committees at Deutsche Börse regularly review and update its composition. Companies that no longer meet the criteria, for example due to a decline in value, liquidity, or profitability, may be removed and replaced by others that qualify.
The DAX 40 Index serves as the foundation for many popular investment products, particularly Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) such as the iShares Core DAX UCITS ETF (EXS1) or Xtrackers DAX UCITS ETF (DBX1). These ETFs allow investors to gain exposure to this broad segment of the German equity market easily and cost-effectively. Alongside the main DAX 40, other significant German indices include the MDAX (mid-cap companies), TecDAX (technology companies), and SDAX (small-cap companies).
