Launched on 3 January 1984 with a base level of 1,000 points, the FTSE 100 Index replaced the older FT30 as the primary measure of UK stock market performance. The name “FTSE” stands for Financial Times Stock Exchange, reflecting the joint venture between the Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange that created it. Today the index is maintained by FTSE Russell, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group.
The FTSE 100 consists of the 100 largest companies by free-float market capitalisation on the London Stock Exchange. Its composition spans 18 ICB Supersectors, with the four largest sectors by weight being Banks, Health Care, Industrial Goods & Services, and Energy. Among the heaviest constituents:
- Healthcare: AstraZeneca, GSK
- Financials: HSBC Holdings, Barclays
- Energy: Shell, BP
- Consumer Staples: Unilever, British American Tobacco
- Industrials: Rolls-Royce Holdings, BAE Systems
- Basic Materials: Rio Tinto, Glencore
Membership is reviewed every quarter — in March, June, September, and December. A company enters the index if its market-cap ranking rises to 90th or above and is removed if it falls to 111th or below. All constituents must be listed on the LSE, denominated in British Pounds Sterling, and meet minimum free-float and liquidity requirements.
