List of Companies in the FTSE 100 Index
The FTSE 100 Index tracks the performance of the 100 largest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) by market capitalization. These companies, representing major UK-listed businesses and often referred to as UK blue chips, are a crucial indicator of the health of the British stock market and broader economy. The Financial Services and Energy sectors are typically the most significant contributors to the index, with substantial representation also coming from Consumer Goods and Healthcare.
A small number of the very largest companies, such as Shell, HSBC, AstraZeneca, and Unilever, hold a substantial weighting within the index. Consequently, the performance of these top constituents has an outsized influence on the overall movement of the FTSE 100.
Inclusion in the FTSE 100 is determined by a quarterly review conducted by the FTSE Russell committee based primarily on full market value. To be eligible, a company must be UK-incorporated and listed on the LSE’s Main Market, meeting specific criteria regarding liquidity and free float (the proportion of shares readily available for public trading).
The composition of the FTSE 100 is reviewed quarterly. Companies that fall below the qualifying market capitalization threshold or no longer meet other requirements may be relegated to the FTSE 250 index, while qualifying companies from the FTSE 250 may be promoted.
Regulated brokerThe FTSE 100 serves as the underlying benchmark for numerous investment products, particularly Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) like the iShares Core FTSE 100 UCITS ETF (ISF) or the Vanguard FTSE 100 UCITS ETF (VUKE). These ETFs provide investors with a straightforward and cost-effective way to gain exposure to the performance of the UK’s largest listed companies. Other significant UK indices include the FTSE 250 (mid-cap companies) and the FTSE All-Share.
