The Hang Seng Index (HSI) tracks the performance of the 80 largest and most liquid companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. These leading corporations represent a dominant portion of Hong Kong’s total stock market value, serving as a primary benchmark for the region’s equity market health. The Financial Services sector historically constitutes the most influential segment, with substantial contributions also coming from Information Technology, Consumer Goods, and Real Estate industries.
The largest HSI constituents, such as HSBC, Tencent, AIA Group, and China Mobile, carry significant weight in the index’s total market capitalization. As a result, their individual performance exerts a major influence on the index’s overall movement.
Inclusion in the HSI requires meeting rigorous criteria: Companies must demonstrate substantial market capitalization, high stock liquidity through active trading volume, and significant free float (publicly tradable shares). Financial stability and adherence to international accounting standards are mandatory, with financial reporting required in English. The company’s primary listing must be on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
The HSI composition is reviewed quarterly by Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited. Constituents failing to meet the criteria—due to factors like diminished market value, reduced liquidity, or financial underperformance—are subject to removal and replacement by qualifying companies.
Regulated brokerThe HSI underpins numerous investment products, especially Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) like the iShares Core Hang Seng ETF (3115) and the Hang Seng Index ETF (2833). These ETFs provide efficient and accessible exposure to Hong Kong’s blue-chip equities.
