The Swiss Market Index (SMI) tracks the performance of the 20 largest and most liquid Swiss companies listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. Representing approximately 85% of Switzerland’s total equity market capitalization, this blue-chip index serves as the primary benchmark for the Swiss stock market.
The index features significant sector diversification, with particularly strong representation from Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Goods, and Financial Services industries. Leading constituents like Nestlé, Novartis, Roche, and UBS Group collectively exert substantial influence on the index’s overall performance due to their market capitalization weightings.
Inclusion in the SMI requires companies to meet stringent criteria: listing in the SIX Swiss Exchange’s main segment, demonstrating high trading liquidity, maintaining headquarters or primary operations in Switzerland, and meeting minimum free float requirements. Regular quarterly reviews ensure the index composition reflects current market conditions, with underperforming companies potentially being replaced.
The SMI serves as the underlying asset for numerous investment vehicles, including popular Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) such as the iShares Core SPI® ETF and UBS ETF (CH) SMI. These instruments provide efficient exposure to Switzerland’s premier corporations and are complemented by expanded indices like the SMIM (Swiss Mid Cap Index).
