Largest Hydrogen Companies by Market Cap | Live Rankings
Linde, founded in 1879 and listed on the NYSE, operates one of the world’s largest hydrogen production and distribution networks and is the leading installer of hydrogen refueling stations globally. Together with Air Products and Air Liquide — founded in 1902 and active in 60 countries — these industrial gas giants anchor the top of the hydrogen sector by market capitalization.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element on Earth. It can be burned to generate electricity or combined with oxygen in fuel cells, producing only water vapour and no CO₂. The industry classifies hydrogen by production method: “green hydrogen” is made using renewable energy to power electrolyzers that split water, while “blue hydrogen” comes from natural gas reforming paired with carbon capture. Approximately 99% of hydrogen is still produced from fossil fuels, but green hydrogen technology is driving a shift across the value chain.
The global hydrogen industry spans several sub-sectors, each represented by publicly traded companies:
- Industrial gases & distribution: Linde (NYSE: LIN), Air Products (NYSE: APD), Air Liquide (EPA: AI) — large-scale hydrogen production, liquefaction, and pipeline networks.
- Fuel cells: Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE) designs solid oxide fuel cells for data centers and industrial facilities; Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP) focuses on PEM fuel cells for heavy-duty transport, buses, and rail.
- Pure-play hydrogen: Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) develops green hydrogen production plants and fuel cell systems for commercial and residential use.
- Powertrains & electrolyzers: Cummins (NYSE: CMI), through its Accelera brand, offers battery systems, fuel cells, ePowertrain systems, and electrolyzers.
- Stationary power: FuelCell Energy (NASDAQ: FCEL) specializes in Direct Fuel Cell power plants.
Air Products operates more than 100 hydrogen plants and maintains the world’s largest hydrogen distribution network. The company is also building the NEOM Green Hydrogen Complex in Saudi Arabia — a joint venture with ACWA Power and NEOM Company powered by 4 gigawatts of renewable energy. Air Liquide, which co-launched the Hydrogen Council with Toyota in 2017, has installed more than 200 hydrogen stations worldwide. These companies trade primarily on the NYSE, NASDAQ, and European exchanges.
