Monthly Payout Investments: Stocks & ETFs With Monthly Dividends
Approximately 75 publicly traded stocks pay dividends on a monthly basis — a small fraction of the broader market, where quarterly distributions are the norm. Monthly payout investments include individual stocks, REITs, Business Development Companies (BDCs), and specialized ETFs, all structured to deliver cash flow twelve times per year rather than four.
Monthly dividends allow more frequent compounding when reinvested, which can improve total returns over long holding periods. They also align well with monthly expenses, making them particularly relevant for retirees and others who draw income directly from their portfolios.
The sectors that dominate monthly payouts include:
- REITs: Required to distribute at least 90% of taxable income to shareholders, many REITs pay monthly. Realty Income (NYSE: O) — self-described as “The Monthly Dividend Company” — has declared over 660 consecutive monthly dividends and is the only monthly payer that qualifies as a Dividend Aristocrat. Other notable names include STAG Industrial (NYSE: STAG), LTC Properties (NYSE: LTC), EPR Properties (NYSE: EPR), and Gladstone Land (NASDAQ: LAND).
- Business Development Companies: Main Street Capital (NYSE: MAIN), one of the oldest and largest internally managed BDCs, lends to middle-market companies and has maintained its regular monthly dividend through multiple economic cycles.
- Mortgage REITs: These companies borrow at short-term rates and invest in longer-duration mortgage-backed securities, profiting from the spread. Orchid Island Capital is one example, focusing on residential mortgage-backed securities.
- Utilities & Energy: Utility companies often operate with limited regional competition and steady consumer demand, which supports consistent cash flow and regular dividend payments.
SL Green Realty (NYSE: SLG), the largest office landlord in New York City, and Gladstone Commercial (NASDAQ: GOOD), which has paid monthly distributions for more than 17 consecutive years, are additional examples of stocks with monthly payout schedules.
On the ETF side, funds like the JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) use covered call strategies to generate monthly income from equity positions.
