SPY — the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust — launched on January 22, 1993, as the first ETF in the United States. It remains the most widely traded ETF in the world, and it consistently tops daily volume rankings on U.S. exchanges. Several other funds regularly trade tens of millions of shares per day alongside it.
High trading volume matters because it translates directly into liquidity. ETFs with heavy order flow typically have narrower bid-ask spreads, meaning lower transaction costs. Volume also supports the creation and redemption mechanism that keeps an ETF’s market price aligned with its net asset value — authorized participants can efficiently create or redeem share baskets when the fund trades actively.
Among the most traded ETFs on any given day, several names appear repeatedly:
- SPY — SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, tracking all 500 stocks in the S&P 500 index. Structured as a unit investment trust by State Street Global Advisors.
- QQQ — Invesco QQQ Trust, launched in 1999 as the first ETF to track the Nasdaq-100. Preferred by institutional traders over its cheaper sibling QQQM due to superior liquidity.
- TQQQ — ProShares UltraPro QQQ, targeting 3× the daily return of the Nasdaq-100. Leverage resets daily, making it a short-term trading instrument.
- SQQQ — ProShares UltraPro Short QQQ, providing 3× inverse daily exposure to the Nasdaq-100. Heavily used as a bearish or hedging tool during volatile periods.
- IWM — iShares Russell 2000 ETF, one of the most popular ETFs in the small-cap space, holding roughly 2,000 U.S. small-cap stocks.
- XLF — Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund, covering banks, insurance, capital markets, and consumer finance within the S&P 500’s financial sector.
- EEM — iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF, a heavyweight that routinely trades more than 20 million shares per day.
