100 Oldest Publicly Traded Companies in the World

Stora Enso, whose corporate roots trace back to a copper mining operation in Falun, Sweden around 1288, is widely regarded as the oldest industrial corporation in the world still publicly traded. Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472 as a charitable lending institution in Tuscany and listed on the Borsa Italiana, holds the title of the world’s oldest operating bank.

This page ranks the oldest publicly traded companies — businesses that were founded centuries ago and remain listed on a stock exchange. Many of the world’s oldest operating firms are privately held (particularly in Japan, where long-standing companies known as shinise number in the tens of thousands), so this list focuses exclusively on those with shares trading on public markets.

The sectors most represented among these centuries-old listed companies include:

  • Banking & Finance: Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (founded 1472), Van Lanschot Kempen (1737), BNY Mellon — whose predecessor, The Bank of New York, was founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1784
  • Materials & Mining: Stora Enso (~1288), DuPont (1802, originally a gunpowder mill)
  • Consumer Goods & Industrials: Fiskars (1649), which has traded on the Helsinki Stock Exchange since 1915, and Procter & Gamble (1837)
  • Utilities: Consolidated Edison (1823), listed on the NYSE since 1824
  • Publishing & Pharma: Wiley (1807), known for the For Dummies series, and Pfizer (1849)

Geographically, Europe dominates the oldest end of this list. Italy contributes the world’s oldest bank, while Finland is home to both Stora Enso and Fiskars. The Netherlands claims Van Lanschot Kempen, founded in 1737 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, which is widely recognized as the oldest continuously operating bank that remains listed on a public exchange. Several American companies also appear, with BNY Mellon’s predecessor being the first company publicly traded on the NYSE when it opened in 1792.
