Most Traded Stocks: Top Volume Leaders by Daily Trading

Trading volume counts every share that changes hands during a session — and the same 500 shares bought, sold, and re-bought register as separate transactions each time. On U.S. exchanges, volume is reported for regular market hours (9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET), covering stocks listed on the NYSE, NYSE Arca, and NASDAQ.

The most traded stocks tend to share a few traits: narrow bid-ask spreads, deep order books, and stable price movement even during heavy activity. For well-established large-cap companies, daily volume of several million shares is typical. Smaller companies may see healthy volume in the range of 100,000 to 500,000 shares, while penny stocks sometimes trade only a few thousand shares per day.

Two ways to measure volume:

  • Share volume (raw count): The total number of shares traded, regardless of price. This is the standard “volume leaders” metric.
  • Dollar volume (notional value): The execution price multiplied by shares traded. This better reflects the actual size of transactions — 100 shares at $362 represents far more capital than 100 shares at $2.20.

Volume typically spikes right after the market opens and again just before the close. Midweek sessions and pre-holiday trading days tend to be quieter. It is also worth noting that high-frequency trading algorithms account for a substantial share of total U.S. equity volume — by some estimates, human traders acting on their own market views represent only about 10% of total volume.

High volume generally signals better liquidity, but the two are not identical. A stock can trade large volume overall yet still have poor liquidity at certain price levels or moments. Relative volume (RVOL), which compares current activity to a stock’s own historical average, is often a more telling indicator of unusual activity than raw share counts.

Many of the names on this list also appear among the largest companies in the world by market cap, and several are components of major indexes like the S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100.
